How Can Pollen Be Collected And Counted
How can pollen be collected and counted?
Pollen counts are done in several ways depending on what type of device a pollen-counting station possesses. Some make use of an air-sampling device to capture pollen in an open area for about 24 hours. In this instrument, pollen particles are stuck on the sticky surface of a dye-filled glass slide at the same time period each day. A microscope is then used to count the pollen captured by the instrument. To make sure, counting is usually done twice.
There are other devices such as the pollen trap, which traps pollen particles in its cylindrical body; and cascade impacter pollen sampling device, whose glass-made capture plates allow small pollen particles to pass through and block large particles.
Due to the very small size of pollens, pollen count is presented as low, medium and high instead of absolute values to avoid errors in exact number. Sometimes, however, it is articulated in grains of pollen per square meter.
Pollen counts are necessary as they make the public more aware of the frequency of pollen in a specific area. Thus, it is a catalyst in preventing pollen allergy from occurring.
