What is Pollen Allergy?
Pollen allergy occurs when pollen particles enter the nose or the mouth and continues to affect the nearby internal and external parts of the body. This allergy is rampant in all seasons except winter. Victims experience itch, darkening of the skin around the eyes, conjunctivitis, runny nose and watery eyes; cough; and sneeze.
It is actually the oversensitivity of victims to pollen, which is treated as an alien substance by their internal parts. As the immune system overreacts to the gentle pollen particles, it produces enormous amounts of immunoglobulin E, an antibody. These antibodies fasten themselves to the body’s mast cells. The allergen, in this case, the pollen particle, fits into the antibody inducing the latter to discharge histamines, leukotrienes, and etcetera that would result to the present symptoms of the pollen allergy.
It is also referred to as ‘Hay fever’ or 'allergic rhinitis.’
